Recently, there was an update that was downloaded to my laptop. The laptop is relatively new, so I wasn’t very familiar with the ThinkVantage Toolbox. Since the update, I have noticed a red “X” on the program icon in the tray (Windows 7) on several occasions and a shadow of the program has been frozen on my desktop or it has been completely frozen with a status of “Checking System Status”.

I downloaded a fresh copy of the program from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73783. Running the program appeared to have executed correctly and there weren’t any error messages. It did detect the presence of a previous version and appeared to have closed it, which is what was expected. This whole process didn’t appear to have solved my problem though.

Reading up on the internet about others having similar issues, I decided to kill off my malware protection, as there were reports of other anti-virus protection interfering. I have been testing Google’s Pack Offering (which included PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Anti Virus, among other things).

I also found that the PC Doctor process, while not visible was still running in the Windows Task Manager. I don’t remember the name of the process but it was something to the effect of pcdr….exe. Either way, the combination of killing off the anti-AV and killing off the process of PC-Doctor started a process that was apparently waiting for a specific condition. An visible uninstaller ran, removing the current version of the ThinkVantage Toolbox. It then installed it.

After the install was complete, the program started and successfully queried my Lenovo Laptop (T410) to the system status.
